At approximately 1.00 – 3.30 pm crew will leg Standedge Tunnel (3.25 miles),
then horseboat with Maria from the tunnel to Diggle Lock 32w to Uppermill; 2 miles and 11 locks
Our legging in 2014 will aim to bring attention to the centenary of the year when David Whitehead supposedly set a record of legging solo through the tunnel in 1 hour 30 mins. Nowadays this claim is viewed sceptically.
In 2014, we remember the outbreak of war in August 1914. Britain’s canals were served by boats which were still mostly horse-drawn. Some canals had never yet had a motorboat on them, including the Huddersfield Narrow. Context – Standedge Tunnel was still being legged while our soldiers were fighting throughout the Great War/WWI.
4 mile guided walk over the tunnel top on the moors, to see the boat enter the tunnel then meet it at the other portal as it exits. Return by walking, car, bus etc.
